Back to School Advice & Essentials Collab

Hey! So as ‘Back to School’ is approaching very soon (sorry for reminding you!) I thought I would do a post on school advice and essentials. I also thought I would team up with another blogger, Mia ( and we’d do a collab! It was so lovely!  This is our advice by answering some frequently asked questions about school and some essentials needed ~

These are the things I personally take to school and you may want to take some of them too! However, if your school doesn’t allow some of these things, or you don’t like them, or for example you don’t wear makeup, then please ignore those!

  • School Bag e.g Rucksack or Satchel
  • Lunchbox (or money for school dinners)
  • Drinks Bottle
  • Small Makeup bag
  • Pencil Case with the following  – Pens, pencils, rubber, sharpener, ruler, protractor set, calculator, coloured pens/pencils, scissors, glue stick, stapler, highlighters and a corrector pen (if allowed)
  • Ringbinder and/or Folder
  • Relevant textbooks
  • Notebook/Diary
  • Useful Bits & Bobs – Hand sanitiser, hair ties, deodorant, body spray/perfume, tissues, nail file, painkillers, plasters, ladies things (girls you know what I’m talking about!), lip balm and gum/mints.

1. What should I do if I am nervous about going back to or starting at a new school?
Going back to school after a holiday, particularly the summer, can be hard. We all have to get back into the school routine and things become less stress-free. Feeling nervous about going back is okay, just remember things will be okay and you can do things to make school more enjoyable. If you really dislike it, then make sure you do things out of school that make you happy and able to relax. Starting at a new school can also be challenging, however you will be okay. Be brave, be organised, never be afraid to talk to new people to create friendships, try new activities and be YOU!
2. How do I find a new hobby in school?
Always be willing to try something out. If it turns out you don’t enjoy it, then don’t do it again, but always try! You never know what will come out of it. Most schools have sports and clubs that you can get involved in. Try a variety of things and see what works best for you. Having a hobby and or talent is a brilliant way to enjoy school a little more.
3. I don’t know what I want to do after I have finished school, so how do I choose the subjects to study? (GCSE/A Levels)
DON’T PANIC, is the first thing. I would advise that if you don’t know what you want to do, just choose a variety of subjects and ones that you will enjoy! That way you will be studying something that you may go into after you have finished school, as you enjoyed the subject.
4. How do I revise/study effectively?
Whatever type of test or exam that comes up, it will always be encouraged that you revise. To study and use your time well, here are my revision tips:
  • Write down the topics that need to be studied in that subject and order what you need to concentrate on first.
  • Create a revision timetable.
  • Set a reasonable amount of time that you will spend revising.
  • Take breaks in your revision to refresh your mind.
  • Revise in a quiet area with the least amount of distractions possible.
  • Use resources to create mind maps, flashcards etc and see what works best for you.
  • Ask for help if you don’t understand something, whether thats a family member, friend or a teacher.
  • Drink and rest plenty.
  • Reward yourself.
  • Most importantly, STAY CALM and just try your best.
5. How do I enjoy and be happy in school?
School doesn’t always have to be stressful, boring and difficult, there are ways to enjoy your school life and have more fun. Things like; hanging out with friends, attending after school clubs or joining a team sport, being organised, asking for help when your unsure, taking breaks from homework and revision and balancing your time well, can all really help you to enjoy and stay happy at school.

I am talking about a few of my school bag essentials also today! Here I are few things that I always have to have in my school bag throughout the day:

Deodorant & Body Spray

This is a must – have for me as even though I didn’t take PE I may have to take part in a lesson once or twice a week and it is always important to freshen up after that, or just if I want to freshen up any day.

This is a bit more of a nerdy one but I find it important to have a school planner as I am a very organised person and like to write everything down, so I don’t forget and I am able to keep everything organised as it makes school life a little bit easier! I haven’t got a planner yet for this year as my school give us fairly nice ones and I like to just use those.

I love to listen to music all the time so these are always an essential for me, but it is the worst thing ever when you are allowed to listen to music through headphones in class and you don’t have any. So from now on I am always going to keep a pair in my bag just in case.

How to make new friends?

This isn’t an easy questions to answer as making new friends can sometimes be hard. When I began secondary / high school a few years ago, I wasn’t expecting to make new friends, I thought I would just stick with my friends from junior school but I discovered I didn’t actually have many classes with them. But to my surprise I made quite a few new friends. I spoke to the people around in my English to find they were in the same situation and were really lovely! I am still friends with some of them now but I have also made new friends since then, as it does get alot easier.

What GCSE subjects should I take?

You should choose subjects that you enjoy! This is the chance to get rid of all those horrible boring subjects that you hate and do things you enjoy doing and that you could see yourself benefiting from in the future.

What did you choose for your GCSE’s?

For my GCSE subjects, I managed to fit into the bracket that qualified me to take all three sciences (Biology, Physics and Chemistry), so I only got to pick three things. I chose History, German and Computer Science. I am excited to get into doing those subjects and learning more from them.

How to fit in homework and hobbies?

Simple answer. Get your homework done as soon as possible! If you get homework that day, do it as soon as you get home or as soon as you can, then it is done and you have as much time as you like to do your hobbies.

How do I stay positive and happy at school?

Just keep your head up. If you are going through a tough time or not doing as well at school as you may of hoped, just keep going. Being sad and negative isn’t going to help you or anyone else around you. Work hard and have fun with your friends that love and support you.

How to deal with fake friends?

I have unfortunately had alot of experience with ‘fake friends’. I just tend to keep my distance and stick with the friends I know love me for who I am, who include me and that enjoy spending my time with. At the end of the day, you don’t need people like that in your life and even if it does make you unhappy that your friendship is over at first, it is not worth wasting your time with them. If you don’t mean anything to them, they shouldn’t mean anything to you!

I want to say a massive thank you to Mia for doing this collab with me!
